Changemaker Chats | Performative Allyship

Performative allyship, as some may already know, is acting in support of or standing in solidarity with an oppressed/marginalized group with the intention of receiving praise for “good deeds.” This “allyship” typically stays within a space that is comfortable and convenient for the “ally.”

About the event

Performative allyship, as some may already know, is acting in support of or standing in solidarity with an oppressed/marginalized group with the intention of receiving praise for “good deeds.” This “allyship” typically stays within a space that is comfortable and convenient for the “ally.” Most times it has more benefit for the individual than the community or cause and can even be harmful.

This Saturday, August 1st at 3pm we will be hosting a Zoom meeting to further discuss what performative allyship is, what it truly means to be an ally, and how we’ve seen different businesses, the police, and others be either performative or true to their allyship in our community.

Below are links to different online resources that will inform our discussion. Be sure to watch, read, listen, and write down any questions or comments you have regarding performative allyship.
